John Owens started making art pottery around 1885 in Roseville, Ohio. He incorporated in 1891 and built a large manufacturing plant in Zanesville. Throughout the years many of his employees went on to form or manage other well known pottery companies. One notable employee, Karl Langenbeck, is argued to be the first ceramic chemist in the United States.
